The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me!

Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walto

Hi, I’m Izzy! (She/they). If you want to know more about me, I have a bio at the bottom of this page. But for now, I’d like to share with you about my upcoming escapade to Denmark.

Two years inside is hard for everyone. Especially someone with the heart of an adventurer. I don’t think I’ve ever spent so much time looking out my window then I did during the pandemic. I was jealous of the birds that could still fly from new place to new place. As soon as I’m able, I remember thinking, I’m going somewhere new. So, a few months ago when I stumbled across a poster for DIS in my lecture hall, I new I had found the perfect opportunity.

In about a month for today, I will be boarding my flight from Chicago to Denmark. Here’s a bit about what I’m expecting during my time there.

As a philosophy major, I’ve thought a lot about the meaning of life. I few years ago, through my studies and my personal experiences, I came to my own personal conclusion on the matter. What makes life meaningful is the connections we make with the people and environment around us. Because of this personal belief, I chose to apply for the homestay housing option while abroad. I want to get to know locals in Denmark on a personal level. Furthermore, I want to immerse myself in a new culture as much as possible. I will be striving to get a taste of the lived experience of a local Dane. Through such happenings, I aim to build strong connections with my host family and the local environment.

I am also extremely excited, as I have mentioned, for the adventures I will experience while I’m abroad. Adventures tend to draw images of grand journeys to people’s minds. However, I do not believe this has to be the case. Adventures can be small. An adventure can be walking around the city streets of Denmark for the first time. An adventure can be biking amongst the masses having never done so before. Adventures can also be big. They can traveling to Dublin with your core course (as I have the privilege of doing). These are all things I am over the moon to experience during my semester abroad.

Furthermore, I am eager for new academic experiences. My core course while abroad is “New Media and Changing Communities”. I am to engage in the small class setting with other students especially interested in this topic. I am fascinated to learn about the importance than media can have in fostering communities.

All of these things and more await me as I runaway to Denmark to start my new adventure.

Until next time!

Izzy
